WHAT IS THE RATIONALE BEHIND THE TEAM FEES?

Tournament Fees:

Tournament fees have gone up dramatically (40-50%) within the last 18 months.  A typical tournament entry fee is now around $750 per team (AND RISING).  The increase is driven in large part to much higher fees for umpires.  If our teams want to play 8 tournaments per year (1-2 in the Fall and 6-7 in the Spring) that is $6,000.  It’s important to note that player fees are just the tip of the iceberg for a family's season expenses.  Each tournament typically costs a family around $500 in gas, lodging and food expenses.

Clinics:

We are including access for each team to bring in highly qualified people to teach specific aspects of the game (e.g. hitting).  Rather than make it an individual sign-up we are focusing on making these lessons available for a team to go through together.  We believe each team will spend around $1,000 throughout the season on these types of clinics.  We are also attempting to secure consistent access to pitching and catching resources.

Equipment Costs:

The cost of equipment has also gone up dramatically.  This sport is rough on equipment!  Below are some of the costs each team has to deal with:

  • Batting tee’s: $100

  • Bownets for hitting: $95

  • Pitching screens: $95-$110

  • Heavy balls: $50-$70 per 6

  • Game and practice balls: $60-80 per dozen

  • Wiffle balls: $20 per 6

  • Softies for indoor practice: $50

  • Catcher’s gear: $200-$400

  • Team bats: $399-$499

  • Miscellaneous training equipment: $20-$500 (Resistance cords to pitching machines)

Teams will typically spend at least $1,500 (and up to $2,500) on equipment throughout a season.

Sanctioning Fees:

  • Registration for USA, USSSA and NSA softball sanctioning and insurance cost each team an average of $600.

Organizational Costs:

  • Administrative applications (TeamSnap and web) $700 per season

  • Indoor facility for winter workouts (up to $15,000 per season)

  • Miscellaneous expenses to run tryouts and organizational meetings: $1,000 per season

An Important Note:

  • The Head Coach does not pay a player fee.  The Assistant Coach gets half off.  For the time they put, it is the least we can do as an organization and a group of parents.

IDEAS TO HELP WITH TEAM FEES

  1. Some parents have been able to secure a sponsor for their child's team fee.  Remember, we are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit youth sports organization and can issue that person a receipt for a tax deduction.

  2. Get aggressive with fund raising! If a team is able to raise significant funds then it has options.  It can go to more tournaments.  It can purchase more equipment and/or clinics.  We can also look at lowering team fees for the second half payment. Each team has access to fundraising activities that the organization has suggested. Contact us if you have some additional ideas.
